There are a few different types of Kale plants. This one is my favourite. It is a Dwarf Green Kale. I use the Eden Seeds variety.
It's easy to grow, it tastes great lightly steamed and I prefer it to Silverbeet or Spinach. In fact, I wouldn't even consider lightly steaming Silverbeet and eating it with a splash of olive oil and balsamic dinner yet I do that with Green Kale all the time. A perfect leafy green hardy vegetable.
You can see it here prepared, ready for inclusion in the soup. I've cut off the hard stalky bits and left the leaves. I think it has quite an attractive ruffle on the end of the leaf.
I'm always really pleased when I come across recipes that use something like Kale. It may be more common in some parts of the world but you don't come across it in Woolies. So recipies can be a bit thin on the ground. This one for Creamy Kale soup comes from a Moosewood cookbook. I loved it. Kids hated it. Par for the course around here at the moment. Still, never give up, never surrender. The children will like vegetables one day.
